Best time for Manali to Spiti Valley Trip

Send Enquiry
The best time to visit Spiti from Manali, and also when the route is entirely open, is between mid-May to October. The route via Manali, going through Rohtang Pass, Batal and Kunzum Pass is free of snow during these months. Especially in September, Himachal Pradesh is void of snow as well as rain, owing to which roads are dry and not muddy.

Water crossings too are relatively calm. Towards mid-October it begins to snow making travel difficult. Following this, the route is entirely shut from November to April on account of heavy snowfall and fierce water crossings. Hotels close down too because temperatures fall as low as -30°C and water pipes remain frozen till winter recedes.

Manali to Spiti Valley Road Condition

The 200 km stretch from Manali to Spiti is as adventurous as it is scenic. Between Manali to Rohtang Pass the road is muddy and raw with major chances of landslides and slush, especially in the monsoon. Through May - July the snow melts leading to muddy puddles and water streams that you need to cross over.

Through September - October, the road is repaired by the Border Road Organization and gets much better, however it is still prone to dry-rock landslides and boulders. From Rohtang to Batal and Losar the road gets better with a few cracks and water crossings. Between Losar and Kunzum Pass the road is terrible, but gets better from Kunzum to Chandratal.

Although very narrow, allowing only one car to pass at a time, the rocky road is slightly smoother than other patches. Following that, from Chandratal to Kaza the road is very bad passing through big streams and boulders that may even lead to journey delays. Once in Kaza, prepare for a smooth journey through the Spiti Valley.

Between May-August the route is also very foggy, making driving difficult. It is best to travel between September and October to experience smoother roads and clear weather.

Avoid in case of heart issues - If you suffer from respiratory or heart ailments, avoid visiting Spiti as the oxygen levels at a higher altitude are low, making breathing difficult.

Beware of landslides - There will be multiple signboards along the way that say ‘Shooting Stones’ which are nothing but stones and rocks falling from the rocky mountains as you drive. If you’re riding, make sure you wear a helmet at all hours and ask pillion riders to do so too, so as to avoid injuries.

Have driving experience - Do not take it for granted that you’ll breeze through because you can drive. The route from Manali to Spiti is treacherous and requires some expertise of driving through water crossings and snow

Do not ignore AMS - Acute Mountain Sickness is a serious medical condition that makes breathing difficult. If you face problems, descend immediately or choose a route of a lower altitude that will allow for acclimatisation.

Information About AMS and Acclimatisation

Send Enquiry
As is known, when the altitude increases, especially above 8000 feet, the barometric pressure of a place decreases, which means oxygen levels in the body start reducing. One needs to breathe more to fulfil the oxygen requirement in the body. When you spend enough time at the same altitude, your body begins to adjust to the oxygen intake which is called acclimatisation.

However, if the body fails to do this, it is referred to as Acute Mountain Sickness which is a serious medical condition where the body isn’t receiving enough oxygen. As you ascend faster and higher, the risk of AMS increases because there isn’t enough time for acclimatisation. AMS generally occurs when you cross 10,000 feet.

Remember, if you are short of breath, do not try to sleep as respiration reduces while sleeping which will worsen the condition. The best cure is to acclimate yourself or descend. In case of minor AMS, you can consume tablets that reduce headaches and nausea, but make sure these are prescribed by a professional. Some might also have side effects, so do not consume anything without a prescription.

The best way to gauge the level of AMS is by asking the patient to walk in a straight line. If he is unable to do so, the necessary medical aid should be provided instantly, or he/she should be brought down from the height.

If you’re an adventure seeker, you may also rent a bike for as low as Rs. 1200 per day. Ensure that you rent a good quality bike like a Bullet or a Royal Enfield with a powerful engine and good off-road capabilities to withstand rocky roads and water routes.
  4. Is Spiti Valley dangerous?

Spiti Valley is a very safe place if you are cautious enough and plan well. Carry the basic essentials, including food, medicines and lots of warm clothes and prepare for anything and everything. But while the area of Spiti Valley is safe, the road leading up to it certain isn’t. The route is carved through the mountains and you’ll often come across boulders and water crossings turned to streams. Slushy areas are also a concern in July and August owing to which tourists say that the route from Manali to Kaza is one of the toughest to travel through.
  5. How far is Spiti from Manali?

Spiti is 202 kms from Manali. However, due to poor road and weather conditions, travelling across the route takes more than 10 hours. Do not be mistaken by the 4 hours that appear on maps.

The road from Manali to Spiti is open and easily accessible during the months of May to October when the town experiences summer and monsoon. These two passes cannot be avoided while travelling from Manali to Spiti, and heavy snow here makes the route inaccessible.
  7. Is there a mobile network in Spiti Valley?

Most mobile networks don’t work in the Spiti Valley. The only one that does is a BSNL/MTNL connection, which is also quite erratic. Voice calls may drop and the sound quality is weak, but you can connect with your loved ones for a short while, nonetheless. Internet connectivity too is very poor, with only 2G working in a few parts of Spiti Valley. As you move out of Manali and cross Rohtang, other networks like Airtel and Vodafone will shut down entirely.
  8. Is it safe to travel to Spiti in August?

Yes, Spiti Valley can be travelled to in August. You might experience a few roadblocks along the way if it begins to rain heavily, but that too is rare. Internal roads across the journey too are accessible in August. However, be wary of landslides and the water crossings that turn to streams in summer and monsoon. These are difficult to get past, especially if you’re travelling by bike and may cause delays. To be on the safe side travel by bus or car during August.
  9. Can we go to Spiti Valley by car?

Yes, Spiti Valley can be travelled by car. However, make sure you’re in a Jeep or any other 4x4 that can be driven through the many water streams and boulders that you will find enroute Spiti. You can even rent a car from Manali to Spiti if you don’t want to risk driving a smaller vehicle. The journey takes approximately 10-12 hours and is the best way to explore tourist destinations on the way. You can stop over at the Chandratal Lake, Kunzum Pass, monasteries in Kaza and many other villages, while enjoying a leisurely trip.
