Visa Requirement For Sri Lanka

Indian travellers planning a visit to Sri Lanka need a valid visa, which can be conveniently obtained through the online Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. This involves filling out personal details, paying the required fee of USD 20 or INR 1,750 (approximately), and awaiting email confirmation—usually within 2–3 working days.

The ETA permits a stay of up to 30 days, making it ideal for a Sri Lanka Itinerary of different durations. When preparing for your trip, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. It is also wise to carry proof of return flights, hotel reservations, and health insurance.

Currency In Sri Lanka

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), commonly available in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000-rupee notes. Currently, 1 LKR is equivalent to INR 0.29 approximately. Since Sri Lanka has an internal currency, which cannot be exchanged outside the country, most visitors either withdraw cash at airport ATMs upon arrival or exchange foreign money at authorised counters.

Credit and debit cards are accepted in many hotels, shops, and restaurants in bigger cities, though cash is still preferred by smaller businesses and tuk-tuk drivers. ATMs are found throughout major towns, making it easy to access funds when needed.

What To Wear In Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s dress code combines practicality with cultural respect, making lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen essential for its tropical climate. In public areas, modest clothing is recommended, especially when visiting temples where both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees.

Women can carry a scarf or sarong to drape over their outfits when needed, while men should avoid sleeveless tops or shorts during temple visits.

For the cooler evenings in hill stations like Nuwara Eliya, a light jacket or sweater is advisable, as temperatures can drop significantly. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for sightseeing and exploring nature trails, while sandals are suitable for casual outings. Swimwear is acceptable on beaches or at pools but should be covered when leaving these areas, as public decency laws apply.

For outdoor adventures, include sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Dressing modestly not only aligns with cultural expectations but also ensures a seamless experience throughout your Sri Lanka tour itinerary, allowing you to enjoy the diverse landscapes and cultural landmarks with ease.

Getting Around In Sri Lanka

Tuk-Tuks:
Tuk-tuks are a popular and convenient option for short trips within towns and cities. They are easily available and can navigate narrow roads and busy streets. Most tuk-tuks do not use meters, so it is essential to negotiate the fare before starting your ride.

Buses:
Public buses are the most economical way to travel between cities and towns. The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) operates government buses, while private buses offer slightly faster services. Intercity buses with air conditioning are a more comfortable alternative for long journeys.

Trains:
Sri Lanka's train network offers one of the most scenic travel experiences, particularly on the route from Kandy to Ella, known for its breathtaking views of tea plantations and lush landscapes. Train travel is affordable but can be slow and subject to delays.

Private Cars with Drivers:
Hiring a private car with a driver is a flexible and comfortable way to explore multiple destinations, especially for families or groups. Drivers are familiar with local routes and can also act as informal guides.

Self-Driving:
While self-driving is an option, it is not recommended for first-time visitors due to challenging road conditions, local driving habits, and frequent traffic congestion. Renting a car requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) and familiarity with left-hand driving.

Ride-Sharing Apps:
Apps like PickMe and Uber operate in major cities, offering cars and tuk-tuks at fixed rates.

Walking and Cycling:
Exploring small towns or cultural sites like Galle Fort on foot or by bicycle is a great way to experience Sri Lanka’s charm.
