Ellora Caves

Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ellora Caves are considered to be one of the world’s largest rock-cut caves. Constructed between 600 and 1000 CE, the Ellora Caves consist of 100 Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist caves, out of which 34 are open to visitors.

While some of the sculptures of the caves have received some damage over the years, the intricate carvings and paintings have stood strong against the test of time.

Bibi-ka-Maqbara

Considered to be the epitome of love and one of the prime historical places in Aurangabad, Bibi-ka-Maqbara was built by the last Mughal ruler Aurangeb in the loving memory of his beloved wife Dilras Banu Begum. Ghrishneshwar Temple

Considered as the Earth’s 12th Jyotirlinga, the Ghrishneshwar Temple is one of the top historical places in Aurangabad for Hindu devotees. Exhibiting prehistoric architecture, the temple flaunts a 5-tier shikara, beautiful sculptures, and intricate ancient carvings.

One of the major attractions within the premises of this temple is the hot spring, which is believed to have divine powers that can cleanse the soul and heart of the devotees. The Grishneshwar Temple was annihilated by the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosale.

Constructed between the sixth and seventh century, the stunning Aurangabad Caves are one of the most frequently visited historical places in Aurangabad. Carved out of basalt rock, these caves consist of 12 beautiful rock-cut Buddhist caves.

These caves are categorized into 3 groups - Group I: Caves 1 to 5, Group II: Caves 6 to 9, Group III: Caves 10 to 12 - and are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Daulatabad Fort

Constructed back in the 12th century, the robust Daulatabad Fort is considered to be a very powerful fortification of the medieval era. This fort had multiple layers of strong defense walls and could only be accessed by a slender bridge.

The Buddist Caves

Part of the famous Ajanta Caves, there are a total of 29 rock-cut Buddhist caves that ooze out calmness and serenity. Sunheri Mahal

Jain Caves

Excavated back in the 9th century CE, a conglomeration of five ancient Jain caves lie at the popular Ellora Caves and make for one of the most interesting Aurangabad monuments. Flaunting impressive carvings and paintings, these caves celebrate the beliefs and preachings of Jainism.

Caves 30 to 35 are marked as the Jain Caves, which are located towards the end of the entire complex. The first Jain Cave (Cave 30) is known as chota Kailasa temple, the third Jain Cave (Cave 32) is known as Indra sabha, and the fourth Jain Cave (Cave 33) is known as Jagannath sabha.

Panchakki

Constructed back in 1734 by Hazrat Baba Shah Musafir, Panchakki happens to be a charming water mill. With a 300 years old tall banyan tree adding to its charm, Panchakki is one of the most beautiful historical places in Aurangabad.

Kailasanatha

Better known as the Kailasa Temple, Kailasanatha is a stunning cave temple, which is one of the 34 ancient caves of Ellora. The 16th cave of the Ellora Caves, Kailasanatha is a monolithic structure built during the Rashtrakuta Dynasty and dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built over a long period of 18 years, the temple is adorned with carvings that showcase various instances from Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Jama Masjid

Dargah of Pir Ismail

Dedicated to and named after the revered Sufi Saint Pir Ismail, the tutor of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the Dargah of Pir Ismail is one of the spiritual Aurangabad monuments. This magnificent dargah will take you back to the Mughal era with its Mughal style architectural design and imperial ambiance.

The entrance of this Islamic shrine has a huge archway and forms a nice portico. Adorned with intricate designs, the structure features a dome, a terrace, a facade, and a parapet.

Lord Hanuman once noticed the King and lied down in front of him in a sleeping position to enjoy listening to his melodious songs in the praise of Lord Rama.

Jain Temple

Located in the village of Kachner, the Jain Temple is dedicated to Chintamani Parshwanath, the 23rd Tirthankara. This temple is believed to be a miraculous spot and the figurine of Chintamani Parshvanath is considered to possess divine powers.

Dating back to about 250 years, the 3.5 feet tall idol is believed to fulfill the desires and heal the troubles of the devotees. The Jain Temple receives the highest influx of pilgrims during Karthik Shukla, the occasion that is observed here with great enthusiasm.

Tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb

Lying in the village of Khuldabad, the Tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb is one of the most famous Aurangabad monuments. The tomb of the last ruler of the Mughal Dynasty, Aurangzeb lies at the shrine of his religious guru, revered Sheikh Zainuddin.

According to popular beliefs, it was the last wish of the Mughal emperor to be buried at the dargah. Unlike that of most Mughal emperors, the Tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb happens to be a modest sepulchre without any adornment that would define the ruler’s royalty.

The accommodation and other facilities provided in trip were really very nice. The hotel room was comfortable, the food was also good, and the driver was also very nice and helpful.
