Forts In Delhi
Red Fort, Purana Qila, Qila Rai Pithora, Tughlaqabad Fort, Siri Fort, Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, Adilabad Fort, Zafar Mahal, Lal Kot, Agrasen ki baoli, Safdarjung Tomb, Salimgarh Fort, Agra Fort, and many more.A city the history of which spans more than 15 centuries has several forts that stand as a testimony of the numerous times it came under the rule of powerful dynastic rulers right from Mughals to Tughlaqs and Tomars. The forts in Delhi were built as fortifications against enemies, as residential palaces, and even as symbols of the rulers’ efforts to assert their power and glory.
Some of the best Delhi forts that give a glimpse into the city’s proud history are the Adilabad Fort built during the rule of the Tughlaq dynasty, Zafar Mahal where the unmarked grave of the great Bahadur Shah Zafar lies empty, and Lal Kot, which is the original Red Fort.
Forts near Delhi are equally fascinating. Notable amongst these is the UNESCO protected Salimgarh Fort that served as a torture centre for prisoners. Another great fort is the Ramgarh Fort in Panchkula that’s now been converted into a beautiful heritage hotel that finds a mention in the Limca Book of Records.
