Hari Parbat Fort

One of the most well-known historical places in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hari Parbat Fort is one that you would not want to miss. Built in a way that the fort is visible from all corners of Srinagar city, it is famous for its scenic surroundings that consist of dense forests and exotic gardens.
It was constructed in the eighteenth century and was later developed by an Afghan Governor by the name of Atta Mohammad Khan. The fort is now occupied by the Indian Army.
A major reason behind why Hari Parbat receives a huge number of visitors every year is because it is also a pilgrimage site for devotees of Sarika Devi.

Charar-e-sharief
This is one of the oldest, most sacred shrines here and is counted among the top historical places in Jammu and Kashmir. Built more than 600 years ago to commemorate the patron saint of Kashmiris, Sheikh Noor ud din, the wooden shrine is popular not only among Muslim devotees but also attracts a lot of Hindu believers from different parts of the country.
Chahar-e-Sharief is also known as the Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali shrine among the locals, after another well- known saint who lived in Kashmir and visited the site to offer his Friday prayers. Followers of various religious faiths swarm here by the thousands during the annual Urs (death anniversary) to seek the blessings.

Pari Mahal

This mesmerizing seven terraced garden is one of the most visited historical places in Jammu and Kashmir. It was built by Mughal prince Dara Shikoh near Srinagar just above the popular Chashme Shahi Gardens. Perched exquisitely atop the Zabarwan Range overlooking the Srinagar and Dal Lake this historical place is veritably alluded to as the abode of angels. The gardens of Pari Mahal are resplendent with vibrant flowers in every conceivable hue and exotic fruit plantations.
It is said that the palace was once home to Buddhist monks and in later years was converted into a school of astrology for the eldest son of emperor Shah Jahan. Architecture of the Mahal is typically Islamic and the gardens outside are well cared for.

Bumzuva Cave
This Hindu cane temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the village of Bawan, about a mile towards its northern side. The entire cave is carved out of limestone and it is also the only group of caves that comprise Jammu and Kashmir’s artificial caves.
The cave that enshrines the Shivalinga is adorned with a trefoil arched doorway and it is said that this was constructed sometime in the twelfth century.
It is counted among the important historical places in Jammu and Kashmir as it finds mention in Indian Archaeology as well as tourist destinations of the state. Both the caves as well as the Shiva Temple are now under the care and protection of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Akhnoor Fort

This fort is situated in the charming town of Akhnoor, about 28 km from Jammu. Dating back to the Harappan Civilization, this is one of the most prominent historical sites in Jammu and Kashmir that was constructed for the protection of the people living here.
The large fort, by the banks of the Chenab Lake, is also a great instance of military architecture which can be seen on the two storeys of the fort with thick strong walls and bastions as well as dedicated watchtowers guarding the premises.
You can see exquisite mural paintings and decorative arches within the palace walls located inside the fort. From this grand palace you can catch majestic views of Shivalik range and Trikuta mountains.

Poonch Fort
Poonch is one of those rich cities that are replete with historical places to visit in Jammu and Kashmir and the Poonch Fort is one of them. Spanning across an area of 7,500 Sq m, the majestic complex sits on top of a hillock and is marked as one of the prime attractions of the region.
The different structures that comprise the entire fort showcase a high level of grand architectural style of the various reigning kings of these lands. The Dogra kings of the eighteenth century had laid the stones for the initial structures which also bear significant resemblances with typical Mughal architecture.
While the central building was constructed by Sikh rulers, later renovations were done by Raja Moti Singh with the help of an European architect.

Martand Sun Temple

Dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, this shrine has been built in a grand style near the city of Anantnag. The Kashmiri Hindu temple is one of the most renowned historical places in Jammu and Kashmir for its architectural splendor and elegance.
If you take a walk down the courtyard, you cannot help but notice the brilliant ways in which the designs and carvings have been fused on the structure that has stood the test of time without a flinch. Built between the seventh and eighth centuries by the third ruler of the Karkota dynasty, Lalitaditya, the use of limestone in the construction is evident.
Being one of the most important architectural and historical places in Jammu and Kashmir, it is now under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Amar Mahal Palace

The palace had been constructed by the erstwhile king of Jammu and Kashmir Raja Amar of Dogra in the late nineteenth century. The museum today however, exhibits a lot of French influence on its architecture.
The structure has been constructed majorly with red sandstone and the museum today houses an enviable collection of rare books, paintings, sculptures and inscriptions.
In the Durbar Hall of the building, you can see life sized portraits of former rulers of this great historical place in Jammu and Kashmir along with other Pahari paintings. A spectacular sight here is the throne of Maharaja Hari Singh that is built with 120 kg of solid gold.

Mughal Garden

This terraced Mughal garden built on the eastern side of Dal Lake is one of the most prominent historical places in Jammu with majestic views of the Zabarwan Mountains that form the perfect backdrop to the blissful garden.
The crystal waters of the lake beneath and the towering snowy peaks of the Pir Panjal above, the garden is like a miniature heaven on earth. It was designed and built in 1633 by the elder brother of Nur Jehan, Asif Khan. The exotic garden comprises a cascade of twelve terraces lined with cypress and chinar trees.
Each terrace represents a zodiac sign and a central canal runs through the length of the garden. Each terrace provides a lovely sight with brightly colored flowers in full bloom.

Bhimgarh Fort
This historical place in Jammu had been constructed by General Zrawar Singh, the brave general in the Dogra army who fought valiantly to repel the Chinese from the Ladakhi region. Built atop a 150 m hillock with great vantage benefits, on the banks of the River Anji, this is one of the most popular historical places in Jammu and Kashmir among tourists who visit Reasi. `The fort is also known as the Reasi Fort and was initially built of just clay.
However, in later years, descendants of Maharaja Rishipal Rana reconstructed the edifice with stones. The fort was given its present look by the famous Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1841 along with its meter wide and fifty meters long strong stone wall at the gate for adequate protection.

Mubarak Mandi Palace

The Mubarak Mandi Palace is located in the center of the old city overlooking the Tawi river and served as the main residence of the rulers of Kashmir from the Dogra dynasty until 1925.
The palace is built in a unique architectural style that is a blend of Mughal, Rajasthani and European styles. One of its most fascinating features here is the Sheesh Mahal or the Pink Hall wherein lies the Dogra Art Museum. The museum houses a number of interesting artifacts and objects of historical importance like several miniature paintings as well as the golden bow and arrow that belonged to Emperor Shah Jahan.
There are several smaller buildings in the palace complex, the oldest of which dates back to 1824.

Shankaragaurishvara Temple
This Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located about 32 km from Srinagar. It was built between 883 and 902 AD by Shankar Varman of Kashmir, however, with the passage of time, the temple has been subjected to neglect bringing it to its present state of dilapidation.
The condition of the temple today renders it impossible to conduct religious services here, although it is still counted as one of the important historical places in Jammu.
The style that has been adopted to build the temple is akin to the Shankaracharya Temple and is counted among the top 15 temples in Jammu and Kashmir for promoting tourism here.

Bahu Fort

Located just 5 km from the city center, the Bahu Fort stands as a symbol of strength and grit by the banks of the Tawi River. A major contributor to the sheer magnificence that the city of Jammu exudes, the fort is one of the oldest structures in the city.
It was built by Raja Bahucholan more than 3000 years ago after which it underwent an upgrade under the Dogra rulers. According to legend, construction of the city of Jammu and that of the Bahu Fort happened around the same time when the then reigning king of the region Raja Jambu Lochan had an intriguing insight.

Sugandhesa Temple
The temple is one of the best preserved archaeological and historical places in Jammu, particularly in its Baramulla district.
