Buddha Dordenma, Thimphu

The Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong), Thimphu

Located on the northern edge of the city of Thimphu, Tashichho Dzong is a Buddhist monastery and fortress. Known as the "fortress of the glorious religion," it is situated by the banks of the Wangchhu River. Originally built in 1216, a fire destroyed the original structure, leading to the construction of the present dzong. A charming rose garden welcomes you at its entrance.

One of the most revered Buddhist monasteries in Bhutan, Tango Monastery or Tango Buddhist Institute is located on steep crags of Thimphu Valley. This institute sits at a distance of 30 minutes drive from the City. Built as a monastery, the institute now serve as an educational institute for monks to study the religious texts. The monastery is built upon a cave where, as per a popular belief, Tibetan Lana Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal meditated once.

This preserve covers an area of 8.4 acres and is located at a short distance of 6 km from the main city. Earlier, takins were kept in the zoo but following the order of the fourth king of Bhutan, they were released in the wild.

But, the animals were so tame that they could not find food for themselves. Consequently, takins were again put into captivity. You can explore these animals at Motithang Takin Preserve between 9 AM and 4 PM.

Choki Traditional Art School

Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan has so much to offer to tourists. One such offering is Choki Traditional Art School. A visit to this art school is a unique experience in itself as it is a school where disadvantaged kids are taught and trained for traditional arts, painting and much more.

Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory

The best part of the entire region of the Himalayas is the local art and the handmade artefacts that just take everyone’s heart away. The same goes for the renowned handmade paper that the Bhutanese prepare by making use of the bark of the Daphne trees.

In the region of Khuju Lam of Thimphu is the small-scale factory of the name Jungshi Handmade Paper, Jungshi meaning ‘Natural’.

The academy is a non-profit org encouraging in preserving the oldest culture of Bhutan, Weaving.

The academy also exhibits their woven clothes made for the Royals to the tourists and plays videos throughout the day showcasing how to drape and wear their traditional outfits, gho and kira. The academy is built to encourage women empowerment and hence free training is provided for their welfare.

Memorial Chorten is one of the most important religious places for Bhutanese people where they worship daily. Throughout the day people walk around the perimeter of the Chorten as a holy ritual. Built in 1974, it is an outstanding illustration of Buddhist culture and architecture.

The whitewashed structure is crowned by a golden spire and is carved with intricate patterns. The spire emanates with the golden glow with the first ray of morning sunlight. The Chorten houses detailed paintings and numerous Buddha statutes.

National Folk Heritage Museum

If you want to see a glimpse of Bhutanese traditional lifestyle, their values and heritage, the Folk Heritage Museum is the ideal place for you. The museum was established in 2001 and is set in a 3 storied timber and rammed earth building which still holds its authenticity.

The handicrafts market of Thimphu is also known as the Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar. The shops crafted from bamboo are lined neatly in row at a mile’s stretch, selling colourful and beautiful authentic handicraft of Bhutan. There are almost hundred shops in the market selling various souvenirs, authentic handcrafted apparels, bags, masks and many more items.

The shopkeepers mostly are Bhutanese women who welcome you with a warm smile. The products are all procured from the local villages. The market aims to preserve the Bhutanese culture and promote their traditions and handicrafts.It is a market where you can spend hours in shopping.

Changangkha Lhakhang

Perched on top of a ridge above Thimphu, Changangkha Lhakhang is the oldest temple in Thimphu. The temple was built in 12th century and houses the central statue of Chenrizig, a manifestation of Avolokitesawara with eleven heads and thousand arms.

It offers a stunning view of the surrounding Thimphu valley from the top. The structure is a fine example of Bhutanese faith, tradition and architecture. There are a number of black and golden coloured prayer wheels in the temple. The prayer book in this temple is larger than other Bhutanese manuscripts.

Drukgyel Dzong

Once serves as a fortress and a monastery, Drukgyel Dzong is now in ruins. It is located in the upper part of Paro. As per the popular belief, the fortress was built in 1649 by Tenzin Drukdra to memorialize victory over an invasion from Tibet. It was completely destroyed by fire in 1951. Punakha Dzong
