Sinhagad Fort

Located around 35 kilometers from Pune, this majestic 2000-year-old fort is one of the most important historical places in Pune. The fort has witnessed numerous battles like the 1670 battle of Sinhagad. Named after the saint Kaundinya, it has changed hands between Koli, Peshwa, and Mughal kings.

It is located atop a plateau in the Sahyadri Mountains and houses the Kaundinya Eshwar Temple, some beautifully carved hidden caves, bastions, and tombs of Rajaram Chhatrapati and Tanaji Malusare. Don’t miss to see the majestic Pune and Kalyan Darwaza, a brewery, and bunkers.

Shaniwar Wada

Symbols of Maratha pride and grandiosity, this is a 17th-century residential fort that was built by Peshwa Bajirao. Once you step inside, you are greeted with imposing architecture with rich Mughal influences spread over 600-acres. Its famous doors include Dilli Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaza, and Mastani Darwaza, used by Bajiro’s companion.

There is a huge fountain shaped like a 16 petal lotus. There are bastions, intricately carved pillars, and wall paintings that display scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana. What we see today are the remains after many British attacks and unexplained 7-day long fires. This is one of the few historical places in Pune to hold a light and sound show every evening.

Aga Khan Palace

The awe-inspiring Aga Khan Palace is considered to be one of the most important landmarks in India, and not only Pune. Built-in 1892 by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III, this huge 19-acre building has a beautiful architecture with Italian and Mughal influences.

The palace housed Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, and Mahadev Desai at the time of their imprisonment. Lal Mahal

Lal Mahal stands as a testimony to the bravery and magnificence of the Marathas, Lal Mahal is one of Pune’s most popular attractions. This is the place that was the family home of Shivaji Maharaj and one can see various stages of his life through beautiful paintings and murals here. The original monument was destroyed by various enemy attacks.

What you will see here is a restored building, very majestic nonetheless This is the place where Shivaji had cut the fingers of the invader Shaista Khan. There is a small replica of Raigad Fort here, which is quite fascinating.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

One of the most unique historical places in Pune, the Pataleshwar Temple is dedicated to the God that lives beneath the earth. This 8th-century shrine is famous for its magnificent architecture that has been carved out of a single rock. The walls are adorned with beautiful paintings and carvings.

In the central area, you will see a huge Shivalinga reposed inside a small cave. Shivaji Bridge

One of the most important architectural landmarks in Pune, Shivaji Bridge is a must-visit while here. This massive structure, also known as Lloyd Bridge, though was built over 110 years ago, is still known as ‘Nava Pul’ or the new bridge. Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple

City’s most revered Ganpati Temple, built around 120 years back, is a must-visit while in Pune. Scores of people visit the temple to pray to Lord Ganesha and is one of the best places to attend the grand celebrations of festivals like Gudi Padwa, and Ganeshotsava. The idol here is adorned by over 40 kilos of gold and is an absolutely beautiful sight.

Shinde Chhatri

Shinde Chhatri stands as an ode to the grandiosity of the Maratha empire and its leader Shri Mahadji Shinde. This building, which was initially a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Upon the passing of Mahadji Shinde the work stopped, which was finally commissioned in 1965 by the political leader Madhavrao Scindia.

The structure looks resplendent in hues of gold, green and brown and consists of floral carvings, glass panels, pillars, and colourful facades, lit up by humongous chandeliers. The central hall is where the leader was cremated. The inner galleries have paintings that depict his life and valour.

Chatushrungi Mata Temple

This temple, famous for its location on a mountain slope, is one of the most revered Hindu temples in Pune. Dating back to over 300 years to the era of the Peshwa merchant Durlabh Sheth Pitamberdas Mahajan who constructed this temple, it is an important abode of Goddess Chaturshringi and Lord Ganesha.

An interesting thing here is a miniature version of the temple is constructed for devotees who are unable to climb the 100 steps that lead to the inner sanctum. The place is visited by thousands during the 9 holy days of Navratri to see the chariot procession and showering of flowers by helicopters.

Vishrambaug Wada

An important architectural landmark of the glorious Maratha regime is Vishrambaug Wada, built in the 18th-century by Peshwa Bajiro as his residence. This yellow-red building, standing quietly amidst a crowded market, can be seen from far away due to its magnificent Maratha style architecture.

The building has a carved pillar, ornamental ceiling, basalt stone floors, and huge arches. It was used as a prison for a while and now is occupied by government offices.

Shivneri Fort

One of the most important historical places in Pune, the Shivneri Fort is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Famous for its striking and intriguing architecture, this 16th-century fort is located in Shivneri. Its humongous gates, arches, and walls take one back to majestic Maratha times.

The fort is now a popular weekend trekking destination. Trekkers especially love the western slope known as the chain route. This is where the Maratha troops used to climb up the fort using chains. Explore ancient caves, natural springs, mosque, and a pond known as ‘Badami Talav’.

Rasalgad

The fact that not much is known about the history of this fort except that it was captured by the British from the Peshwas, makes it one of the most intriguing historical places in Pune. Due to its location amidst lofty green hills and lush valleys, it has become a popular trekking destination.

Once you reach the summit, you will see two majestic gates that are still in good condition. There is a Veer Maruti idol and a Zolayi Devi Temple at the top. Don’t miss to see the 16 water cannons near the fort.

National War Museum

As one of the best historical places in Pune, National War Museum is sure to fill you with patriotism and pride. This one of a kind museum is self-funded by the city’s citizens to honor the war heroes. Tribal Museum

Tribal communities have always been fascinating, and this museum is a great place to get to know these elusive people, which otherwise is not possible. The place houses a wonderful collection of artefacts belonging to over 47 tribes of Maharashtra. You will see their jewelry, photographs, weapons, hunting tools, and musical instruments.

Masks used during tribal dances, paintings, utensils, and clothing also form a major part of these collections. Built-in 1962, this museum is now a part of the Tribal Research and Training Institute and is a major contributor to education and research about these communities, their lifestyles, and culture.

Dehu Gatha temple

Dehu Gatha Temple is the largest and the most revered temple in the city. Dedicated to Sant Tukaram Maharaj, it was built in the 17th-century around the banks of Indrayani River. The most unmissable aspect of the temple are the carvings of legends about the Saint. They are easy to read and people believe that everybody who visits this temple must read at least 3 of these.

There is also an idol of Lord Pandurang inside. The best time to visit is during the month of Ashadh (June-July), when colorful processions are taken out in the memory of the Saint and people recite the legends about him.

Nana Wada

The 17th-century Nana Wada stands as an ode to Nana Phadanvis, one of the bravest Peshwa fighters. This is one of the oldest historical places in Pune designed in unique architecture. The timber ceilings are made in traditional wadi-style, there are huge golden-yellow arches, carvings on the walls, and Cyprus tree-like pillars.

You will see a Diwan Khana on the first floor, which also has some manuscripts in the Modi script prepared by Nana himself. An interesting feature here is the emergency exit dating back to the time of its construction. Nana Wada is now housing a school.

Mahatma Phule Museum

One of the best places for those interested in knowing how the Indian culture evolved, Mahatma Phule Museum never fails to surprise. The museum was initially the residence of the prominent social activist Jyotiba Phule and was converted into a museum in 1890 and named as Lord Ray Museum. It houses life-like models of prehistoric elephants, snakes, birds, and insects.

Other sections contain exhibits, paintings, and models related to irrigation, handicrafts, science, power generation, refining, etc. The museum has a library of rare books on these subjects. Bhide Wada

Bhide Wada occupies a very important position in the societal development of Pune, especially for girl’s education. This is the site of one of the first schools for girls when it was taboo for them to study. Place: The scenery there is really breathtaking. All the hills and the lake view is amazing. The place makes you stay there for life long. If you really want a peaceful, beautiful and close to nature place then this place should be on your bucket list. Hospitality: The host Rahul Slave was really humble and a cheerful person to talk. They will try to give their best by providing all kind of basic needs and anything you could ask for at such a remote place. Food: The starters are really amazing. I enjoyed the food as a non-vegetarian. I was really impressed with the tea and poha breakfast. I recommend you to try the breakfast. Activities: They have multiple activities including DJ, Bone Fire, Cricket, Archery, Boating, Badminton, Karaoke etc.

We had a great time at the Bhimashankar Trek. The trekking was quite good and interesting. It was awesome. We had a really lovely time here. It was so worth every penny spent. The trek trails, the surroundings, the backdrop were all just WOW! It was completely worth every penny spent. I personally want to visit here again. The trek was well organized too; thus enhancing the whole trek experience. Thinking back there are no negative experiences at all. It was perfectly a great and a nice experience. The rates were also not that costly and it was definitely worth the time and money we spent on this vacation. I am so recommending this to everyone out there.

We had a good trekking experience here in Lonavala. Pune and Lonavala are places that can be viewed in a couple of days. While we planned for a long vacation here, we chose to have a beautiful planned itinerary which involved this trek, and we are super glad that we took it. Regarding the trek, it was a great experience.

It was our first experience there on trekking. Thrillophilia package includes guide so we have a good guide there and he helped us well during this entire trek. The food they gave is quite nice and delicious. Bhimashankar was my personal favourite place in this trek. Our group was of 12 people but we all enjoyed it nicely. Good place and Highly recommended.
