Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a heaven for avian life. Every year, more than 60 species of birds flock to the sanctuary to escape the harsh and inhospitable winters of Siberia, Central Asia and Europe. These include gulls, terns, sandpipers, herons, cormorants, and whimbrels. The sanctuary is native to Malabar hornbills, kingfishers, darters, woodpeckers, and Brahminy kites. The wetlands provide both food and shelter to these wandering birds. Apart from birdwatching, you can enjoy activities like boat rides, nature walks, wildlife photography, picnics and hiking, making it a must for things to do in Calicut.
Kadalundi is about 21 kilometres away from Kozhikode and holds a lot of historic significance, dating back to the Sangam period, 300 BCE- 300 CE. The estuary, mangrove and the sea provide a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The best time to visit Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is between November, during which the birds migrate in preparation for winter, and April, the month when they leave. But the diverse avian population attracts both passionate birdwatchers and general visitors all year round.
