Best Time To Do Skandagiri Trek
The best time to do the Skandagiri trek is between November and March. During these winter months, the weather is pleasantly cool, creating a comfortable environment for the 4–5-hour trek. This period also offers clear skies, crucial for enjoying the trek’s highlight- witnessing the breathtaking morning views from the summit. The views of mist-covered hills and valleys are especially enchanting in the early mornings.
Summers (April to May) are moderately warm but can still be manageable for early-morning treks. However, it is best to avoid trekking during the monsoon season (June to September) due to heavy rainfall, which can make the trails slippery and challenging.
Planning the trek during the recommended months ensures not only safety but also an enhanced experience with stunning vistas. You can enjoy the magical Skandagiri trek that makes it one of the most sought-after treks near Bangalore.
How Difficult is Skandagiri Trek?
- Slippery Trail (Monsoon Specific): The Skandagiri trek becomes particularly challenging during the monsoon season (June to September) due to slippery trails caused by heavy rainfall. Wet rocks and muddy paths increase the risk of slips and falls, requiring extra caution and sturdy footwear. You are advised to avoid monsoons for safety and an optimal trekking experience.
- Rocks and Stones: The Skandagiri trek is moderately difficult due to its rocky terrain. You must navigate uneven paths and steep sections laden with stones, which requires balance and endurance. This rugged surface can become particularly tricky during ascents and descents so it is important to wear sturdy footwear and keep caution, especially for beginners.
- Muddy Sections: The Skandagiri trek also has muddy sections that can make navigation challenging, especially during or after rainfall. These areas require careful footing as the loose mud increases the risk of slipping. Proper trekking shoes with good grip are essential to tackle these patches safely, ensuring stability on the trail.
What to Experience during Skandgiri Trek?
- Kalavara Durga Village and Temple: Kalavara Durga is a small village known for its serene surroundings and historical significance. Nestled in the hills, it is home to the ruins of an ancient Shiva temple, which adds a spiritual charm to the region.
- Historical Fort Ruins: The remnants of an ancient hilltop fort, built during Tipu Sultan’s reign, stand along the trail, adding a historical charm to the journey.
- Dense Forest and Sea of Clouds: A stretch of dense forest along the trail makes it a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers, while the summit at around 1,450 meters rewards early trekkers with the breathtaking "sea of clouds" phenomenon.
- Panoramic Views from the Summit: The breathtaking view from the summit includes the surrounding hills, Chikballapur town, dense forests, and villages, along with four of the five "Giris."
