North Sikkim is a road circuit, and each stop plays a different role in the journey. Understanding what each place offers helps you decide what to prioritise.
Gangtok: The Staging Base
Almost every North Sikkim tour plan starts at Gangtok. At 5,500 feet, it is the right altitude to acclimatise before the circuit takes you above 14,000 feet. Most travellers spend a day here sorting permits, adjusting to the weather, and exploring MG Marg, Rumtek Monastery, and Enchey Monastery. An evening at Lal Bazaar is also worth a visit for experiencing local food and culture.
Lachen: Gateway to Gurudongmar
Lachen is a quiet village at 8,900 feet along the Lachen River. It serves as the overnight base before the early morning drive to Gurudongmar Lake. The village has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Lachen Gompa, one of the older monasteries in North Sikkim, is a short visit worth making on arrival. Nights here are cold even in summer, and we recommend heavy layers regardless of travel dates.
Gurudongmar Lake: The High Point of the Circuit
Gurudongmar Lake is located at an altitude of around 17,800 feet, making it one of the highest lakes in the world. Revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs, it is also one of the most-loved attractions among Thrillophilia travellers visiting North Sikkim. On a clear day, the lake's crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountain views create an unforgettable experience. Due to the high altitude, travellers should stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity, and consult a doctor before travel if they have any health concerns.
Lachung: Base for Yumthang and Zero Point
Lachung is a mountain village at around 9,600 feet along the Lachung River and serves as the base for visiting Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. The scenic drive from Chungthang passes through waterfalls and pine forests. Travellers can also visit Lachung Gompa, a 19th-century Buddhist monastery. Many Thrillophilia travellers rate Lachung among the most picturesque stops on the North Sikkim circuit.
Yumthang Valley: Valley of Flowers
Yumthang Valley is at 11,800 feet and is best known for its spring bloom. Between late March and mid-May, over 24 species of rhododendron bloom across the valley floor alongside primulas and alpine wildflowers. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary within the valley is one of the largest reserves of its kind in India. Outside bloom season, the meadows are dusted with light winter snow, or the hot springs near the valley entrance make it worth visiting year-round.
Zero Point (Yume Samdong)
Zero Point is the last motorable point on this side of North Sikkim, at over 15,000 feet. Beyond it is a restricted military zone. Snow is possible here even in summer. Convoy rules and early departure windows mean your driver and itinerary need to account for specific timing. The views are raw and open in a way that nothing else on the circuit quite matches.
Other Places Worth Including
-
Thangu Valley: At around 13,000 feet, this high-altitude meadow between Lachen and Gurudongmar is perfect for stargazing and wide Himalayan views.
-
Chungthang: The road junction where the Lachen and Lachung routes split. Logistically important, with a small market for last-minute supplies.
-
Seven Sisters Waterfall: On the road from Gangtok to Chungthang, particularly dramatic after rain.
-
Singhik and Mangan: Mangan is the district headquarters with a local market. Singhik offers some of the best views of Kanchenjunga along the route.
-
Chopta Valley: Accessible on permitted treks beyond Zero Point. Pristine alpine terrain very different from the road circuit.
