Leh to Pangong Lake

Leh to Pangong Lake is a journey that everyone who arrives in this heaven takes to see the most beautiful lake in the country. The blue heaven like lake that stretches for about 134 km between India and China, it is one of the most mesmerizing sights that people from all over the world come to witness while on their trip to Leh-Ladakh.

Wide by about 5 to 6 km on its broadest point, Pangong is a lake of saline water, with very less vegetation around and limited species of Crustaceans living inside the lake. The most important highlight of the lake, however, is the perfectly still water in the midst of towering snow-capped mountains.

The blue water of the lake reflects the sky and the mountains, making this the most picture-perfect in Ladakh. As far as getting to the Pangong Lake from Leh is considered, the main location of Spangmik near the lake is located at about 160 km one way.

Connected via road, the ride takes one over the Chang La Pass (5,360 m) and the Pagal Naala (The Crazy Stream), before one lands up in Pangong (4,250 m). One of the most picturesque, and one of the most pictured location in the country, Pangong is also one of the most dreamy locations in the country.

Leh – Shey – Karu -Sakti – Chang La -Durbuk – Tangste - Lukung – Spangmik – Pangong Tso

The usually taken route to get to Pangong Tso, this is also the shortest and least troublesome. You start on this route taking you from Leh to Pangong Lake which will take you to the destination, Spangmik in about 6 to 7 hours.

Beginning from Leh, the route takes you first to Shey, the famous village which still houses a 5 century old Palace, the Shey Palace. Built by the then king of Ladakh, the palace is mostly known for housing the largest golden statue of Buddha in the entirety of Ladakh. From here, as you move on the Manali-Leh highway, you hit the junction city of Karu, where the way then leads you east, towards the lake. Driving a mere 9 km from here, you will arrive at a small village called Sakti, which is the home to a colorful and vibrant Takthok Monastery.

The run from here brings the visitors to a high mountain pass called Chang La. At the height of 5,360 m, Chang La is counted amongst some of the highest passes in the world and is an equally important post. So far, the roads are great and made in asphalt, however, the climb is steep and requires a careful drive.

For about 10 to 15 km before and after the pass, you will find only dirt roads, because of the streams that erupt in the summer season erode it away. With a military post and cafe on the top, Chang La is a place where it is advised to not stay for than 20-25 minutes.

On the last stretch towards the lake, you will find the roads turn rough again till you reach Durbuk, post which the roads appear again. And so do the shops as you come across the major town of Tangtse. A small drive on the narrow roads from here takes you to Spangmik, the last town on the road, especially famous for the scintillating views of the blue lake that the place offers.

Hence, as a reason, there are a lot of camps and small accommodations that have erupted at this location. This is where you can enjoy the majesty of Pangong at its best.

Diskit / Panamik - Khalsar - Agham - Tangyar - Wari La - Tathok - Sakti - Chang La - Durbuk - Tangste - Lukung - Spangmik

This route actually starts from Nubra Valley and is traversed in case someone does not want to return to Leh to go to Pangong, saving a day. Starting from Diskit, the center of Nubra Valley, the route takes to you to Khalsar. This junction village is where the road bifurcates to go to Leh and the Shyok Valley. In the initial days, this road was less known as the adventurers usually went to Leh with no or less knowledge of the inner roads of Ladakh. To this day, these roads are less known and less traveled.

As you drive further, you will reach another junction village called Agham. The road to your right takes you through Shyok Village, while the one to your left takes you to the offroad heave of Wari La. As you turn right, you need to prepare yourself for some of the toughest roads that you have ever driven on, with a multitude of steep sections and dirt roads. Climbing up to the Wari La Pass is something that will test the metal of any rider. One thing to note about this road is that when the snow starts to melt in the summer seasons, a number of streams erupt on the road, making things even more difficult. While riding on this road during your Leh Ladakh trip, you should be ready to see lesser and lesser number of vehicles, with only prayer flags appearing in a few locations.

The grinding on the dirt road continues till you arrive into the village of Sakti, from where a sharp left brings you on to the Pangong Lake Road. The road will then take you over Chang La, through Durbuk, Tangtse, and Spangmik to finally arrive at Pangong Tso.

Rafting can also be enjoyed on the rapids of the Zanskar river. The force of the waters along with the twists and turns of the river makes rafting in Ladakh on the Zanskar a memorable adventure activity.

Diskit/Panamik - Khalsar - Agham - Shyok Village - Durbuk - Tangste - Lukung - Spangmik

Comparatively shorter than the Wari La route, this road may be a straight shot to Durbuk but is one of the most difficult routes that you may have ever drive on. Driving for the most part along the Shyok River, the streams that run into its flow makes things a little more difficult, while the dirt ridden road full of boulders only makes things more adventurous.

The road starts from Diskit, and goes onto Khalsar and then onto Agham, where you take the right turn and prepare yourself for a scenic ride straight to Pangong. The drive continues and you keep crossing the Shyok River a few times before finally arriving at the beautiful village of Shyok. As you arrive here, there is only 70 km of the road left in front of you, which will only take a couple of hours.

As you keep riding, you will eventually drive into the Pangong road on Durbuk, from where it is only about 50 km to Spangmik. Pangong is a beauty and as you drive on this road, you will see it from a long distance away, pulling you in instantly.

Safety Tips and Guidelines

Send Enquiry
As with any journey, Pangong Lake from Leh is definitely something that will excite you to the core, but will also come with a set of its own precautions. You must always keep the following things in mind while making the trip.

- Always keep your papers handy and keep a few copies with you just in case of a mishap.

- It is advised that you keep your personal medication always with you in case you may need it urgent. This is because of two reasons:
1) you may not find it in Ladakh
2) there is no medical facility on the way apart from the one at Tangtse.

- Cash is equally as important because the only ATMs are in Leh, and the places near Pangong do not accept cards.

- Dress according to the weather around. The altitude is really high and if you are someone who has not been at that height before, prepare yourself.

- Keep yourself hydrated as dehydration is not only the first symptom of AMS, it is also the first contributor to it. Especially during the journey from Leh to Pangong Lake, as you will be passing higher altitudes like at Changla Pass, make sure you take enough water.

- It is really dangerous to wander in these areas on your own, so
1) always stay with or within the sights of your entourage
2) if you are traveling alone, do not stray onto places you don’t know about.

We went for Manali to srinagar Bike tour. It was the best bike trip of my entire life It all started with the person named Shubham from thrillophilia who helped me in selecting the best trip and processed with my booking, all thanks to him! Without him I wouldn’t have been able to experience the best trip of my life. On arrival there, we met our tour guide Tani and our Mechanic Shashi about whom I have read a lot at thrillophilia reviews. These 2 guys were so supportive during the entire tour that no matter what happened they were always there to look after us. They always made sure we are safe and we are following them and there is no overtaking taking place. Tani, the tour guide, one chilled out person he is! Make sure you get him as your tour guide and Shashi as the mechanic as these guys will always make sure that they are there for you no matter what. And in the end, it’s all the Main man behind everything, Jimmy Sir. Thanks a lot Sir for making me experience the best trip of my life! Without you and your team this wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks for helping us out in every way possible. The roads here are difficult terrain to ride on. You gotta be careful. You gotta carry your gum boots during water logging which is the most difficult to cross. But these guys made sure that we were all safe and had sound health till we reached home. Not even a single person was hurt. Our group was a mixture of all age groups, I’m fact we even got to meet 2 people From the Indian navy as well. One mad kickass experience! Unbelievable. Reaching the worlds highest Pass, Khardungla Top, was the highest achievement of my life till date which happened on this trip! And if at all you wish to go, don’t forget to ask Tani and Shashi as your tour guide and mechanic, and go only through Jimmy Sir as he has the best team! Thanks a lot to everyone out there for which I thought the best way would be to write at thrillophilia reviews.

We had a wonderful experience with Thrillophilia Out tour was Leh-Ladakh 6N7D, which includes Leh Sightseen, Nubra Valley Overnight Stay, Pangong Overnight Night. 1. First of all you should know that Thrillophilia doesn't have its own Travel Team. Thrillophilia actually linked up with several local Travel Agency. Once your Tour is booked Thrillophilia tagged one local Travel Agency for your Tour and that particular travel agency will take care of your entire tour. Our travel manager is Lobzang Tseldon. She is very helpful and you will not face any problem in your entire tour. 1. Hotel provided in Leh: Ladakh Heights. The hotel was very good, neat and clean. It is a new hotel so you don't found any pics in the internet. But lobzang will send you the pics of the Hotel. There is a canteen within the hotel where you will be having complimentary breakfast and dinner. Non Vegetarian please let Lobzang know that you want non-veg items as well.they generally prepare veg items only.but on request they will provide you omlette in breakfast and chicken/mutton in dinner. So if anyone wants to book Thrillophilia please ask Thrillophilia to tag you to the travel agency that offers non veg items too. The Hotel Ladakh Heights is a bit far from the main city but don't worry Lobzang will provide you car for visit to Leh market whenever required and she will not charge you for that. You will get a beautiful view from this hotel but if you want to stay near the main city you will not get any view from the hotel. 2. The stay at Nubra Valley was awesome. They have Royal Camp in Nubhra and it's is a nature-friendly camp. You will love it, I can guarantee you. 3. They stay at Pangong was okay. You can understand that at that altitude you will not get luxury.so the camp provided at Pangong was good for 1 night stay. Overall my experience with Thrillophilia was very good. We enjoyed a lot. Thanks a lot to Lobzang Tseldon for the wonderful arrangements of our tour.

"Trip was really awesome. I feel everyone should consider this trip at least once in their lifetime. My eyes were never tired of looking around at such beautiful and scenic views. I would like to extend my special thanks to Tour leader Mr. Jigmet Tandar. He is highly trained professional. The way he lead the tour made us have more fun. Thanks to the whole crew Jigmet, Stanzin, Wangyal, Kaushal, Tundoop. Made a lot of new friends. One suggestion to Thrillophilia team: Since this is not just any casual trip that anyone can go through please consider keeping a screening process for people who opt for it. This is one of the most extreme adventures where your body and mind will go through a lot of challenges, one can successfully complete this trip only if they are determined and well prepared."

An exhilarating life-changing experience. If you are able bodied, a biking lover, a landscape / scenery admirer and a crazy adventure seeker, this is a must try for life. Our group of bikers were fun-loving yet very responsible riders. We became friends on the very first day and all of us enjoyed every moment, giving mutual respect at every instance, having each other's backs at every dangerous turn. Even elderly couples in the group made amazing memories with all the young folks! The Ladakhi food, the heritage site visits, the campfire dancing, the photos, the market shopping, the music, the hikes, the snow, even the adorable mountain dogs, furry yaks and double-hump camels, every-bit was amazing. The road team was extraordinary, specially Tani (captain) and Shashi (bike repairman). They were very friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and also helpful at every step. We had a truck carrying our luggage all along, running behind us all through the roads, making sure no one is left behind. Jigmet has a lot of local connections, so you will be well taken care of at camps and hotels (even Jain food, on request).

Excellent
I had a wonderful trip with Thrillophilia. Hotel provided in Leh was clean and good. All sightseeing places covered as per itinerary. The camping stay at Nubra Valley and near Pangong lake was awesome. We enjoyed a lot and overall experience was great.
