Places to Visit On Jaisalmer Tour
Jaisalmer Fort

Included in almost every Jaisalmer tour package, Jaisalmer Fort is a
landmark of this destination. Defining what the city stands for, this
fort is an architectural marvel that leaves a lasting impression.
One of the largest forts in the world, it was built by Bhati Rajput
leader Rao Jaisal, from whom the name of is derived. The citadel was
designed in such a way that it stands amidst the glory of golden
stretches of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. Situated on Trikuta Hill, the
majestic structure has been a foreground for a number of battles.
Its yellow sandstone makes it look like the colour of a lion and
fades into honey gold tone during sunset. That is why it is often
referred to as a Golden Fort. The change in sandstone appearance helped
the palace to camouflage itself in the yellow desert. Located in the
heart of the city, this is certainly one of the best monuments in the
country.

Gadsisar Sagar Lake

A major tourist attraction, Gadsisar Sagar Lake is reflective of how
people from Jaisalmer used practical and intelligent approach to solve
their daily matters. Being a desert area, the city either receives
extreme rainfall or gets no monsoons at all. To deal with this issue and
to ensure that the entire city had supply of water, Maharwal Gadsi
Singh constructed the Gadsisar Sagar Lake in 1400 AD.
The lake wasn’t an oasis, but rather served as a conservation tank
which controlled the entire water supply of the city. This water body,
which was designed over 500 years ago showcases the practicality of
Indian rulers and allows one to marvel at scientific technique of
rainwater harvesting that rulers used during those times. The place
where this lake is located is devoid of large populations, allowing it
to automatically retain rainwater.
Today, the lake is a hub for migratory birds that come from Bharatpur
to this region. It is here you can spot elusive birds. The lake is
surrounded by a number of small temples and a beautiful gateway that are
often included in Jaisalmer packages for touring.
