The Bell Tower is an ancient structure with European architecture that stands tall in the square's southeast corner. It was built to hold the body of St. Mark the Apostle, brought from Alexandria, and made the town protector. This was a very important fact for Venice to become a separate seat for the bishops. In 1063, work on the current basilica began in the Byzantine style to show how powerful the wealthy Venetian Republic was. Building this basilica was based on two basilicas in the ancient city-state of Byzantium. It has five big domes, a plant shaped like a Greek cross in the middle, and a unique mix of East and West art.

Doge’s Palace is one of the most ancient constructions we find in Venice, Italy.
