How to Reach Guwahati from India

The easiest way to travel to Guwahati is via direct flights, primarily available on a regular basis from major Indian cities. Kolkata takes less than 1.5 hours and is the fastest direct route to Guwahati, while cities like Mumbai take an average of 3.5 hours to reach.

Direct Flights to Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport – GAU)

  • Departure Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bagdogra, Patna, and Imphal
  • Flight Fare: INR 5,000-10,000 depending on departure city and time of booking
  • Duration: Most routes range between 1.5 and 3.5 hours depending on the departure city
  • Operating Airlines: IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet, Akasa Air
  • Best For: Metro city travellers, short breaks, travellers using Guwahati as a transit city

Railway Routes to Guwahati

  • Kolkata provides the most frequent direct railway routes to Guwahati, making Guwahati trips from Kolkata one of the most easily accessible routes. Regularly operational trains include Saraighat Express, Garib Rath, and Vande Bharat, taking 14-20 hours depending on the train.
  • Other major Indian cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore also have direct connectivity to Guwahati via train, although at a frequency lower than that of Kolkata. The most popular trains include Dibrugarh Rajdhani and Vivek Express. They usually take up to 50 hours, generally routing through New Jalpaiguri.

Best Time to Visit Guwahati

While the monsoon season limits wildlife exploration, Guwahati has otherwise year-round suitable weather for city trips and additional extensions. Each season offers something unique that adds to the experience of every kind of traveller.

Here’s a guide to help you figure out the best time to base your Guwahati trip plan on.

October-March

This is the overall peak season to book a Guwahati package. With the temperature ranging from 10°C to 28°C, the skies are clear and the weather dry and stable, perfect for outdoor sightseeing. All ferries, roads, and airport logistics are fully operational.

April-June

This season is more humid with temperatures of 25°C to 35°C. With occasional thunderstorms, the crowds are lower, perfect for temple visits or short city stays. Depending on water conditions, expect ferry delays or occasional cancellations. Due to the school summer holidays window, this season receives the most Guwahati family tour package bookings, as per Thrillophilia's internal booking data.

July-September

The peak monsoon window of Guwahati, with a temperature of 24°C to 32°C, the frequent rains and high humidity lead to very few traveller visits. The rain paves the way for rich, green landscapes, perfect for photography. However, waterlogging and ferry cancellations are a common occurrence in this season, resulting in frequent internal travel delays. Make sure your itinerary is planned with enough buffer time so as not to disturb the travel flow. Avoid wildlife-focused extensions in this window.

Top Destinations to Cover in a Guwahati Tour Package

Although a Guwahati trip plan usually consists of an extension, like in Meghalaya Guwahati tour packages, Guwahati itself has multiple sites worth exploring. These are the best places to visit in Guwahati:

  • Kamakhya Temple: One of the most important Shakti Peethas in India, Kamakhya sits atop Nilachal Hill and draws both pilgrims and travellers throughout the year. It can get very crowded, especially in the mornings, so starting early makes a big difference.
  • Brahmaputra Riverfront: The riverfront is best experienced in the evening when the weather cools down. Whether you choose a cruise or simply walk along the banks, this is where Guwahati feels the most relaxed.
  • Assam State Museum: A good starting point for understanding the region, especially if it’s your first time in Assam. The exhibits are straightforward and help provide context before exploring other cultural sites.
  • Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary: About an hour from the city, Pobitora is known for its high density of one-horned rhinos. It’s best planned as a dedicated day trip rather than trying to combine it with other activities.
  • Fancy Bazaar: This is where you get a feel of how the locals live in Guwahati. Busy, slightly chaotic, but full of character. It’s best explored in the evening when the markets are lively, and the street food scene is at its peak.

Best Experiences to Include in a Guwahati Tour Package

A Guwahati tour feels most rewarding when you balance temples, river views, culture, and a bit of nature without rushing. Here are the best things to do on a Guwahati trip:

  • River and City Experiences: A cruise or ferry ride is best enjoyed at sunset and in evening windows. But if you want a more private and calmer experience, go for early morning explorations, a common planning detail found in most Guwahati honeymoon tour packages. Cruises are usually more expensive and comfortable, while ferries prioritise authenticity and accessibility over comfort.

Highlights: Brahmaputra River cruise, Umananda ferry crossing (budget alternative to cruise), Riverfront walking / sunset pacing

  • Spiritual and Heritage Experiences: For temple visits, make sure to get an early start since Kamakhya tends to get very crowded. Don’t stack temples as half-day plans, as they end up being rushed and unsatisfying. Split them across 2 days instead. If you want a quieter experience, go to the North Guwahati temples for fewer crowds.

Highlights: Kamakhya Temple, Umananda Temple, Navagraha Temple, Ugratara Temple

  • Cultural Experiences: The best time to experience Guwahati culturally is at midday, with rain and heat buffers pre-planned into the itinerary. Since these are non-weather-dependent activities, travellers on a Guwahati group trip can easily cover these as half-day plans. If you want a more academic experience, prioritise the museum visit first, followed by Kalakshetra. For a more experiential approach, reverse the order.

Highlights: Assam State Museum, Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati Planetarium

  • Wildlife experiences: Depending on your time, you can cover these as half-days or full-day add-ons. If you’re short on time, visit Assam State Zoo and Chandubi for relaxed, slow-paced explorations. Pobitora, with the highest rhino density, requires a full 1-day trip, so make sure you don’t stack it with other time-consuming activities.

Highlights: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam State Zoo, Dipor Beel, Chandubi Lake

  • Local Life and Market Experiences: Shopping and local life explorations are best done in the evening, after your day's activities are over. Fancy Bazaar is the most commercial part of the city, perfect if you want to observe the daily lives of the locals on a leisurely evening walk.

Highlights: Fancy Bazaar exploration, Assamese food trail

Highly recommended. We were a large family of 10 members, including children & aged parents & who booked package for Meghalaya & Shillong experiences. The host & their team where real caring, be it food, guidance, knowledge of local must things to do & we felt very homely. The homestay was excellent for cleanliness, hospitability, being tucked away from the chaos of the city, yet easily accessible to all amenities. Everyone of family were highly indebted to this wonderful hospitality & experience.

I was very skeptical at first, about traveling to a lesser explored north-eastern, primarily tribal state, Meghalaya, that too with a bunch of strangers. People were warning me before my trip about earthquakes, land slides, bizarre foods, tribal arrogance, and all those things that might take a wrong turn. And now that I have completed this amazing trip, let me share my views. I met strangers on the trip, and those were the most caring and kind ones I'll ever meet. The views were all breathtaking. Everytime we stopped by a waterfall, we couldn't resist the urge to get in the cold, clean water. We visited the national border along Bangladesh, met with a lot of new people, explored uncharted territories, and trek through the Meghalayan landscape in the dark, we tasted some of the best food we have ever tasted, we danced and talked our hearts out and lastly bid a warm welcome, with a promise to meet again someday. Memories were created and will last forever

Trip was an excellent time away from the busy schedule. We covered all the desitinations which were mentioned in the iteniery. Our driver Pinku Deka was alway on time and helpful with local information. We had left our hiking stick behind which he arranged to be collected by his local network. All the hotels were nice and clean. While going to visit the Arwah caves do carry your torches with you to see the fossils, for Nongriat trek it is advisable to carry a hiking stick even though you would get a bamboo sticks to buy.. I would gladly recommend thrillophilia if you are planning your next trip

Amazing places and good experience with thrillophilia. Itinerary was well planned and they tried to make us cover most of the nice places. Driver was a local person who knows end to end and was very helpful in the journey.

The trip was beautifully planned and we had a wonderful time. The local driver was very helpful, punctual and professional and took extra efforts to make our trip wonderful. A truly memorable holiday! Unfortunately, the Umngot River was not pristine as advertised, but this was due to the pollution caused by the ongoing major highway construction work on the Shillong-Dawki highway. Thank you very much for an amazing holiday!

The trip was well planned by the team. The local commute was well organised, the driver had good knowledge about the place and was polite. Accomodation places were very well maintained. With good connectivity and food. We had visited many hidden waterfalls thanks to our driver who made it point to inform and take us to beautiful hidden gems of meghalaya and local food delicacies. The double decker trecking was very good, it might be challenging for few ppl but try to take a extra mile to go to Blue Lagoon which is worth the treak and carry an extra pair of swimming costumes to take a dip at the extraordinary spots. Best time to travel: November starting to December.
