About Sphinx

The Great Sphinx of Giza, a monumental limestone statue with a lion's body and a human head, stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian engineering and artistry. It is located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo. This iconic sculpture is closely associated with the Pharaoh Khafre, who ruled during the 4th dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around 2558 to 2532 BC. The Sphinx is part of a larger complex that includes the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Sphinx, measuring about 73 meters long and 20 meters high, is one of the world's largest and oldest monolith statues. Despite its grandeur, much about its origin remains a subject of debate. According to legends, people believed that the Sphinx represented Khafre, guarding his pyramid and temple as a symbol of protection.

Over the centuries, the Great Sphinx has undergone numerous restoration efforts to address the damage caused by natural erosion and human activities. One of the most intriguing facts about the Sphinx is that the traces of pigment on it indicate that the structure was once colourful.

Today, the Sphinx stands as a symbol of Egypt's ancient wonders. It attracts both scholars who study its history and tourists captivated by its mystery. Its enduring presence serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich past and the legacy of its ancient builders.

We booked the Egypt Nile cruise package through Thrillophilia and the experience was excellent from start to finish. The Egyptologist guide arranged for the Luxor and Aswan sections was outstanding. He spoke fluent English and had a way of making the history feel urgent and relevant rather than like a textbook. Abu Simbel required an early morning flight which Thrillophilia had sorted as part of the itinerary without us having to figure out the domestic connection. The Pyramids of Giza on the first day and the Valley of the Kings on Day 4 were the biggest highlights. Cairo Khan el-Khalili bazaar on the last evening was a wonderful chaotic end to the trip. The team was reachable throughout and responded quickly whenever we had a query. Romba nalla planning from the Thrillophilia team. Would definitely book again.

Our Nile cruise was the most relaxing part of our journey from Kolkata. Seeing the temples of Luxor and Karnak was a dream come true for my history-loving parents. Thrillophilia's planning was impeccable.
