About Immigration Museum

Situated in the center of the city, Immigration Museum is a multicultural custom museum that showcases history and celebrates the diversity of immigration through shared storytelling. The museum provides a thought-provoking experience of sad, funny, and compelling stories of the lifestyle of the first settlers of Australia through its exhibits dating back to the 19th century. It allows the visitors to discover the history of families in Australia through the archive of immigrant details in the museum.

Opened to the public in 1998, the Immigration Museum served as the administrative center of immigration and customs of Melbourne in the beautifully restored Old Customs House on Flinders Street. Today, it houses an abundance of authentic stories about the people who have migrated from different parts of the world to Australia. It also conducts an exhibition named Becoming You that allows you to learn about the background of the popular immigration personalities of Australia. You can also explore the concept of identity and what it means to belong and not belong to Australia.

The center space of the museum is the captivating former Long Room which features massive Ionic colonnades. There are exhibition galleries in the Immigration Museum that hosts multiple exhibitions and events, like Leaving Home and Immigration Stories, Mine, Ours, Timeline, and Yours.
