Mahabodhi Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Mahabodhi Temple was built back in the 3rd century BC. Offering one of the best Buddhist religious experiences in Bihar, the Mahabodhi Temple is constructed at the same place, where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment.

Bodhi Tree

An important part of the Mahabodhi Temple, the Bodhi Tree is a peepal tree, under which Gautama Buddha meditated and attained spiritual awakening and salvation, some 2500 years ago. In Buddhism, the very term ‘Bodhi’ implies ‘awakening’ or ‘the state of being aware about the universe”.

The present day Bodhi tree found here is actually the fifth succession of the original Bodhi tree. The tree is encircled by beautifully carved stupas and buddha statues. You can see a number of Buddhist monks meditating and reading under this tree, whenever you visit the place.

Historical Facts: Bodhi Tree is the same place where Buddha attained enlightenment after penancing for over a month and hence, it is a famous spot for people following Buddhism. On December 8, there are many Buddhist followers who visit this spot to celebrate Bodhi Day. 

Facts: The tree here is not the original one under which Buddha sat, but the fifth in succession. It is believed that the daughter of King Ashoka of the Mauryan Dynasty took a branch of the original tree to Sri Lanka and planted it there in Anuradhapura, which is still there in its original form and is known to be the oldest tree.

The current tree in Gaya is known to have grown from the sapling brought from the tree in Sri lanka itself.

Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji

Built back in 1839, Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji is one of the most important religious places in Bihar for the sikhs. This majestic gurudwara was built to commemorate Guru Gobind Singh, who was born here back in 1666.This place has also been visited by the revered sikh gurus, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Nanak.

Believed to be one of the most sacred of the 5 takhts, Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji also shelters some of the personal belongings of Guru Gobind Singh, including his ‘pangura’, sandals, sacred sword, and 4 iron arrows. It also preserves the holy book that has the ‘Hukamnamas’, which is the set of orders written by Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh.

Vishnupad Temple

One of the most-visited religious places in Bihar, Vishnupad Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Vishnu. Perched on the serene banks of the Falgu river, this temple has the footprint of Lord Vishnu to incised into a block of basalt.

According to popular beliefs this footprint was incised, when Lord Vishnu put his right foot on the chest of Gayasur and buried him below the surface of the earth. Although the real facts of the construction of Vishnupad Temple is still unknown, the present body of the shrine is believed to have been built in 1787 by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar.

Historical Facts: According to the legends, this temple has a 40 cm long footprint of Lord Vishnu, which marks him subduing Gayasur by placing his foot on his chest. Some also believe that Lord Ram visited this place with SIta during his exile. The current structure of the temple was restored and rebuilt by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, the queen from the Holkar Dynasty from Indore in 1787.

Architecture: Since, this temple was restored by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, one can clearly see the style of that era in this temple. The whole structure stands on beautifully carved 8 rows of pillars and the height measures to 30 m.

It is said that the officers searched for the best stone in the whole area and then finally settled with munger black stone to create the structure. Talking about the pyramid height, it reaches up to 100 feet. The whole design and structure is strategically designed and angled and connected with iron clamps for utmost strength.

Thai Monastery

Established back in 1957 by Buddhist monks and the Government of Thailand, the Thai Monastery aims at propagating the preachings of Lord Gautama Buddha and strengthening the friendly relationship between Thailand and India.
 
One of the most revered buddhist religious places in Bihar, the Thai Monastery flaunts a typical Thai-style architecture. Tibetan Monastery

Lying close to the Mahabodhi Temple, the Tibetan Temple and Monastery was built in Bodhgaya back in 1938. This monastery flaunts an impressive architecture, which is adorned beautifully with Tibetan scriptures as well as Buddhist symbols. The monastery is home to a 10 meters tall red and golden painted dharmachakra (Wheel of Law).

According to popular beliefs, rotating the dharmachakra three times in a clockwise direction can free you from all your sins. You can also see the picture of Maitreya Buddha at this monastery, which is believed to be the future incarnation of Gautama Buddha.

Royal Bhutan Monastery

Lying in Bodh Gaya, the Royal Bhutan Monastery was built here by the King of Bhutan as a token of tribute to Gautama Buddha. This monastery features impressive clay carvings that represent various instances from the life of Lord Buddha. Flaunting the traditional Bhutanese architectural design, this monastery houses a temple and a common restroom for the monks.

The temple is home to a 7 feet tall Buddha statue, with various Buddhist scriptures and symbols inscribed on it.  The Royal Bhutan Monastery also features a visitors’ guesthouse with a total of 15 well-kept rooms.

Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple

Constructed back in 1972 by Indian and International Buddhist communities, Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple presents an excellent amalgamation of impressive Japanese architecture and rich Buddhist culture. Carved out of wood, this beautiful temple resembles a typical Japanese shrine.

Jal Mandir

Situated in Pawapuri, the Jal Mandir is dedicated to the 24th Tirthankara and founder of Jainism, Lord Mahavira, Jal Mandir is one of the highly esteemed religious places in Bihar for jains. Perched amidst a huge water tank packed with beautiful lotus flowers, Jal Mandir signifies the site of the cremation of Lord Mahavira as he attained Nirvana in Pawapuri in 527 BC.
 
Believed to have been constructed by the elder brother of Lord Mahavira, King Nandivardhan, this marble temple worships the “Charan Paduka '' of the lord.

Historical Facts: Originally built by King Nandivardhan, known to be the elder brother of Mahavira, Jal Mandir is one of the main five temples where the "Charan Paduka" of Mahavira is deified.

As we all know Mahavira, the prince of Magadha Kingdom, attained Nirvana at the age of 30 and since then it has been of great significance to people following Jainism. During the Chaturmas, the auspicious month for Jains, many monks preach religious teachings here to people and make them aware of Jainism. 
 
Architecture: As the name suggests, Jal Mandir, is a beautifully designed white marble temple within the water tank that measures 84 bigha. The whole water surface is covered with beautiful lotus flowers which makes the aesthetics all the more appealing and beautiful. It also has a footprint of Lord Mahavira in the form of  "Vimana" a chariot.

This temple also has a 600-foot-long bridge made out of stones that connects the temple with the water tank. Made out of white marble, this temple shines in the moonlight which is really eye-catching.

Chinese Temple

Lying opposite to the Mahabodhi temple complex, the Chinese Temple was built back in 1945 by the Chinese-Buddhist monks and the Government of China. This temple was later renovated in 1997. The present building of the Chinese Temple flaunts a unique blend of Chinese and Indian architectural designs.
 
The temple is home to a 200 years old Buddha statue that is said to have been brought from China. In addition to this, the main temple also houses three other golden Buddha statues. 
 
Timing: 8 AM to 6 PM

Location: Located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, this beautiful temple is just 1 km away from Bodhgaya Bus Station and is opposite to the Mahabodhi Temple complex.

How old: This is a quite old temple built in the year 1945 by Chinese-Buddhist and was later renovated in the year 1997.

Architecture: Depicting the Chinese art and architecture, Chinese Temple is a blend of Indian and Chinese architecture and depicts royalness. It also has a Buddha Statue which is said to be 200 year old, originally brought from China. Apart from the main statue, this temple has three more Buddha statues which are main attractions here.

Patan Devi Temple

Known locally as “Maa Patneshwari Mandir”, Patan Devi Temple happens to be one of the oldest religious and most sacred places in Bihar. Dedicated to the Hindu goddess, Maa Durga, and originally known as Sarvanand Kari Patneshwari. Patan Devi Temple is considered to be one of the country’s 51 Siddha Shakti Pithas in India.
 
According to age-old mythological beliefs, this temple has been built on the same site, where the right thigh of goddess Sati fell.

As the legends go, this is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. When Devi Sati, wife of Lord Shiva died, and Lord Vishnu, with his Sudarshan Chakra cut her body, it was chopped off into 51 parts making 51 Shakti Peethas, and this temple is one of them. 
Festival: Known to be the abode of Maa Durga, a huge fair is organised here during the time of Vijayadashmi, on the last day of Navratri. Also, on the last three days, i.e., Saptami, Ashtami and Navami nearly 600 people gather together to offer their prayers to the Goddess. People offer sweets and garlands and make their wishes. It is believed all wishes here come true.

Padri Ki Haveli

The oldest church in the state, Padri ki Haveli offers one of the best religious experiences in Bihar for christians. Also known as Visitation of the blessed Virgin Mary, this church was constructed by the Roman Catholics back in 1713. The shrine was re-designed by the renowned Venetian architect Tirreto in 1772.

Padri ki Haveli has witnessed a number of historical battles including the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. It was also in Padri ki Haveli that Mother Teresa practiced her nurse training in 1948.

Nalanda Mahavira

The ancient Mahavihara was a Buddhist monastery that also became an important center of learning during the reign of the Magadha empire. The Mahavihara was counted among the world’s greatest educational centers between the fifth century CE and 1200 CE.
 
During this period, the Mahavihara received much fame and recognition and achieved a legendary status. It was also visited by the Chinese pilgrims and philosophers Faxian, Xuanzang, and Yijing. At the present day, the Mahavihara is in ruins and has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 
 
Later this place was converted into an institute by Rajendra Prasad in the year 1951 and was renamed as Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM) to revive the ancient learning that used to happen in Nalanda. 
 
Location: This university is located in the Nalanda district of Bihar and the present campus is 100 km away from the metropolis of Patna. This university is situated on the southern bank of lake Indrapuskarani, in close proximity to the ancient University of Nalanda campus.

Chotti Dargah

Situated at a small distance of around 30 kilometers from the heart of Patna, Chotti Dargah is a 3-storey mausoleum of the revered Muslim saint Makhdum Shah Daulat. This dargah stands on the site, where the saint was buried back in 1616.
 
Flaunting an impressive architecture, the Chotti Dargah was built by Ibrahim Khan in 1619. The dargah is adorned by a gigantic dome with its ceiling carved with holy texts from the Quran. You can also see a huge water tank, perched in front of the dargah.

Pathar ki Masjid

Perched on the serene backs of River Ganga, Pathar ki Masjid is one of the most important Islamic religious places in Vaishali, Bihar. Also known as “Sangi Masjid”, “Chimmi Ghat Mosque”, and “Saif Khan’s Mosque”, this majestic masjid was established in 1621 AD, under the command of Parvez Shah, the son of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Some also connect this place to the Ramayana era, as Sita was born in Janakpuri and some consider Janki Mandir as a shakti peetha which is not true. 

Festival: Being in Janakpuri, the festival of Ram Navami is highly celebrated here as this place is considered to be the birthplace for Devi Sita. Apart from Ram Navmi, Janamashtni, the day when Lord Krishna was born, is also celebrated here with great enthusiasm.
