Langkawi’s hidden gems prove the popular notion that nature is full of surprises. If you’re stunned by its towering peaks, prepare to be enthralled by the 500 year old mangroves that sprawl across the Kilim Geoforest park here. Of course, the island is home to more beaches than one can keep track of, and some of its best kept secrets include stunning coasts that are often overlooked by tourists- the Pasir Tengkorak Beach, or the Skulls on Sand Beach, is only one such example. Alternatively, if one seeks truly luxurious experiences, one should seek out a day or a night at Paradise 101, Langkawi’s very own private island resort.

Langkawi Mangrove

Stowed away in the Kilim Karst Geopark is one of the best-hidden gems in Langkawi: the lush green mangroves that breathe life into the island.

The Kilim Geopark's central area comprises more than 100 square kilometers of mangroves surrounding the Kilim river.

The best way to enjoy the mangroves is to take an experienced guide on a private boat or Jet Ski trip.

These boat rides will take you on a voyage to see the fruit bats hanging in caves, the red-backed sea eagles soaring in the sky, and the monkeys and pythons dwelling in the marshes.

Timings: 09.00 AM- 05.00 PM on all days of the week.

Gunung Raya

At 881 meters above the sea, Gunung Raya stands proudly as the tallest peak in the city.

The greatest spots to visit in Langkawi can all be seen in one glance from the mountain's summit, which offers a panoramic view of the island.

According to legend, the mountain is actually the cursed embodiment of the extinct island giant Mat Raya.

The forests along the slopes here are home to some of Langkawi's best native wildlife, such as monkeys, flying foxes, macaque monkeys, white-bellied eagles, mountain-hawk eagles, great hornbills, and several other bird and animal species.

Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark

Perhaps best termed as one of the hidden gems in Langkawi, the UNESCO Global Geopark offers a true insight into the natural wealth of the island.

A ‘geopark’, as its name suggests, focuses on the geodiversity of the island, and the Global Geopark at Langkawi features Malaysia's finest and most comprehensive Palaeozoic sedimentary succession.

The UNESCO Global Park includes three main geosites: Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park all protect geodiversity and biodiversity.

The biodiversity found in a variety of habitats, such as mangroves, tidal flats, beaches, estuaries, coral reefs, caverns, limestone, and many more sanctuaries for different life forms, is also protected by these geoforest parks.

Gunung Machinchang

Mount Mat Cincang, Langkawi's second-highest peak at 2326 feet, is inevitably home to some of the best vantage points in the city.

Mount Mat Cincang can only be accessed by a strenuous trek, and as they say, the most spectacular views come after the hardest climb.

One of the three geosites covered in the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Mount Mat Cincang is home to a staggering range of plant and animal diversity.

The stunning beauty of the peak also includes the Seven Sisters Waterfall, which is regarded as Langkawi’s most beautiful.

The famous Langkawi Cable Car ride also takes place from this very peak.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

Often called the Seven Sisters Falls, the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall is one of the best kept hidden gems in Langkawi.

The seven natural pools created by streams flowing from Machinchang Mountain, Langkawi's second-highest mountain, give the Seven Wells Waterfall its name.

The 91-meter vertical drop of this majestic waterfall is breathtaking; on the other side, the base is somewhat impeding its fall.

The top and lower parts of the Seven Wells Waterfall are separate waterfalls when walking along it, so tourists should be prepared for a hike.

To get to the highest point of the waterfall, you are ready to climb 640 stairs. The typical climb takes 45 to 60 minutes, and there are several marks along the way that show how many stairs are still to go.

Shining out among the other Langkawi hidden gems, Tanjung Rhu offers the cleanest shoreline on the island.

With crystal-clear waters, powder-fine sand, and swaying coconut trees, Tanjung Rhu is a crisp, tidy, and somewhat secluded location.

The majority of the people that hang around here are guests of the Tanjung Rhu Resort, a gorgeous 5-star hotel with a beachfront location in a quiet part of Langkawi.

For a day at the beach, remember to bring your beach mat, your favorite book, and some refreshments.

Pasir Tengkorak Beach

One of the city’s least visited beaches, Pasir Tengkorak is the best hidden gem in Langkawi.

The beach is often dubbed as the “Skulls on Sand” beach, owing to the legend of dead sailors having once washed up here after a wreck in the Straits of Malacca.

The white sand beach is bordered by a lush jungle that provides shade, and the rock formations at the extremities of the beach date back 500 million years.

Pasir Tengkorak Beach has its own picnic tables, prayer halls, restrooms, and a nearby little food cart in addition to camping, hiking, and sunbathing.

Pantai Pasir Tengkorak, one of the island's nicest public beaches, provides visitors with a tranquil setting with gazebos for shade.

Tuba Island is home to geologically significant granite and marble rock formations dating back over 290 million years and is part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park.

Tuba Island is a remote island near Kuah Town that is famous for its traditional village life, rare wildlife and plants, and even birdwatching.
