About the Activity:
Fly to Leh
As most roads are blocked during winters, air is the only way to reach Ladakh. The temperatures in Leh will always be in the negatives, so wear your warm clothes in the flight itself to avoid the drastic drop in temperatures from affecting you as you descend from the flight.
Leh is immersed in snow and at times the roads will also be hidden under a thick sheet of ice. Due to this, the city will only be partly open.
Only the shops catering to local needs will be open and hence, buy all your gears from your city.
Stay overnight in Leh.
Drive to Tilad Do via Chilling
11,400 to 10,390 ft.
Climb to Shanti Stupa and Witness the Sunrise
Trek to Tilat Sumdo ( 1-2 Hours approx.)
Overnight stay at camps
Drive 65 kms.
You can start the morning by witnessing the sunrise from the Shanti Stupa , from where you can get a panoramic view of the entire town of Leh and its surroundings. You can also see the peak of Stok Kangri almost beckoning you to climb it.
But today’s agenda includes a very picturesque and thrilling long-drive to Chilling. The roller-coaster ride takes you along the Indus to the village of Nimu, where the Zanskar converges into Indus. After stopping at this confluence point to take in the view, the drive continues and the road begins descending right into the river valley. There are quite a few heart-stopping moments as the vehicle negotiates the steep hairpin bends over snow covered road. The road goes past Chilling to Tilad Do. Among these mammoth mountains, the feeling of insignificance of one’s being does not escape anyone.
To reach the camp-site, you have to cross the frozen Zanskar river and this is when you take your first steps on the Chadar. It takes a while to get a hang of walking on the ice sheet. As the evening comes, the team pitches tents on the banks of the Zanskar, and hands out thick warm sleeping bags. To get some exercise and keep warm, you can climb up the nearby mountains and get a good look at the frozen river. As the sun sets, it drags the temperature down with it, and the sleeping bags in the tents look quite inviting.
Tilad Do to Shingra Koma
The day will start with a few stretching exercises, breakfast and a briefing by the instructors on how to trek on the Chadar.
The weather at Chadar is not very predictable, at times it can be cold with hard surface of slippery ice or it can be soft fresh snow.
A 12 km trek will lead you to Gyalpo through Shingra Koma. Surrounded by towering mountain peaks, enjoy an overnight stay in your tents at a bend in the river.
Shingra Koma to Tibb Cave
After breakfast, kick-off today’s 14 km trek with scenes of frozen waterfalls and sky-reaching mountain walls which block most of the sunlight.
The trek ends with a hot cup of Ladakhi tea and stay overnight in tents in the Tibb Cave.
Tibb cave to Naerak camp
A 5 hour trek after breakfast through the beautiful cliffs, Juniper trees covered with prayer flags and the valley of Chadar will take you to the region’s largest waterfall, Nyerak waterfall.
After a refreshing stop at the Nyerak waterfall, continue towards your destination, Nyerak village, where you will camp overnight at the side of the frozen river, in tents.
Naerak to Tibb Cave
This day marks your return journey to Tibb Cave and although the trek is the same, there is a slight change in weather conditions.
Stay overnight in tents inside the cave, just like last time.
Tibb Cave to Shingra Koma
The second day of your return journey will show you mesmerizing views of frozen waterfalls.
The destination for today is Gyalpo with an overnight stay in tents.
Shingra Koma to Tilad Do and drive to Leh
The last day of your Chadar Frozen River Trek will leave you wanting more of the snow and mountains.
At Tilat Do, a vehicle waiting for you will take you back to Leh.
Return from Leh
Today is the end of the tour. Catch a flight from Leh for your return journey.
