Bakong Temple, Siem Reap

As Bakong Temple is the first mountain temple sandstone in Cambodia, it has a special space in the culture and tradition of the country deeply. Located near modern Siem Reap, the temple was constructed by the rulers of Khmer Empire. It has the shape of a stepped pyramid which intricately exposes the Khmer architectural styles. It was also the official state temple of King Indravarman I in the final decades of the 09th century AD. Ed inside is Lord Shiva. The primary deity placThere are three concentric enclosures and they are separated by different moats. Elephant statues as guardians at the corners of three lower levels of the pyramid and statues of lions remain as the guardian at the stairs.

Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap

This is a must visit place in Cambodia for architecture and history lover. This park contains the architectural remnants of some of the most beautiful structures and temples in Cambodia that were constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries.

Highlights – This is one of the most important architectural hubs in South East Asia. Though there are many temples here, the most famous ones are Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple and at Angkor Thom. Built in traditional Khmer style of architecture, these temples attract millions of foreign tourists all through the year. The park is set across 400 sq. km. and it was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during 1992. Angkor Wat Temple is considered to be the oldest temple in the world.

Timings - Most of the temples in this area are open from 5AM to 6PM.

Banteay Srei Butterfly Centre, Siem Reap

Highlights – One of the newer tourist spots in Cambodia’s Siem Reap Province, Banteay Srei Butterfly Centre, shortly known as BBC, consists of thousands of butterflies in one single place. It is the biggest butterfly exhibit centre in South East Asia and is definitely worth a visit for nature lovers. When you visit BBC, you can get introduced to butterfly farming, life cycle of butterflies, butterfly conservation and other ecological details. The amount collected by tourists goes towards the welfare of the local people. There are expert guides to take you through the farm.

War Museum Cambodia, Siem Reap

Me Chrey, Siem Reap

Situated in close proximity to the famous Angkor temples, Me Chrey is a beautiful floating village which offers guests various opportunities to feel entertained. Living with locals and bird watching are few of them.

Highlights – When you visit the floating village of Me Chrey on Tonle Sap Lake, you should mandatorily get to know about the lifestyle of the locals living here. Cambodia Landmine Museum, Siem Reap

This is one of the must visit places in Cambodia for environment lovers all over the world.

Highlights – This is probably one of the very few places in the world, where you will know about landmines, their dangers and risks, how it impacts kids, how it kills people and ways to disarm these landmines. There is a farm right behind the museum, where kids who are saved from landmines are put in relief camps and cared for. The museum is a repository of excellent tools, guns, weapons and other equipment that were used for mining in those days.

Krol Ko, Siem Reap

A small temple built in the 12th century which has much importance in the traditional aspects of Cambodia is Krol Ko. Park of the Oxen is the description given to the temple that is located very close to Neam Pean. A tower and a ‘library’ are the main structures included in the temple and as the history says, King Jayavarman VII was the one who erected this temple as well. Every other main Khmer temples in the region, Krol Ko also has a deep influence of the Khmer reign and the particular architectural technique of that period. But what attracts the visitors mostly is the pediments on the ground along with the triangular pediments of Avalokiteshvara standing on a lotus and of Krishna who lifts the Mount Govardhan.

Banteay Kdei, Siem Reap

"A Citadel of Chambers" is the meaning of the word, Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist Temple in Angkor. It was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 13th century AD. Bayon architectural style extends the temple the pride glory of ancient times. It has resemblances to the intriguing structures of Ta Prohm and Preah Khan but less complex and smaller. The temple is encircled by two walls and monks were always there until 1960s. Sprawled across the Angkor archeological area of 400 sq.km. The compound walls enclosing the temple are made of laterite stones. The complex showcases a variety of architectural nuances and sculptors which were dating back to the old Buddhist traditions.
