Things to Do in Ranikhet

Bhalu Dam

Bhaludam, is considered to be one of the best places to visit in Ranikhet. It is a small lake made artificially.  Located at a distance of 3 km just below the Chaubattia Orchard. The lake was built in 1903 by the British Government. The dam site is nourished with natural beauties, panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountains, calmness and scenic surroundings. 

The small but beautiful garden nearby the dam is serene and tranquil. The singing of birds, the cool breeze and snow-capped valleys makes the dam area a perfect holidaying spot for the nature loving tourists all around the world. The dam site is open for tourists all through the year.

Majkhali

Situated at a distance of 13 km from Ranikhet, this beautiful sightseeing spot is a must visit. Offering stunning views of Mount Trishul, the spot is ideal for nature lovers.  An action-packed afternoon here will include a lazy picnic, some outdoor games and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. 

Away from the hustle bustle of city noise, you can enjoy melodious sounds of quiet surroundings and the soft chirping of birds. For the more adventurous, there are a number of walking trails around the foothills.

Haidakhan Babaji Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Haidakhan Temple is a Hindu temple located in Chilianuala of Almora district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand at a distance of about 4 km from the famed hill station of Ranikhet. It was constructed by Shri Haidakhan Maharaj who is said to be the manifestation (avatar) of Lord Shiva. 

The devotion and the holy location of this beautiful temple attract large number of devotees and tourists from across the globe. One can get a stunning view of the giant Himalayan peaks including Pancha Chooli, Nanda Devi and Trishul Parvat from the vicinity of this temple. All the people visiting this place are embraced equally and is an ideal place for rejuvenating and refreshing you from the regular hustling and bustling of the hectic city life.

The Jhoola Devi Temple

The Jhoola Devi Temple of Ranikhet is an ancient relic built in the 8th century, located at 7 km from the town. The superior deity of this temple is Goddess Durga and is a believed at this temple, that Jhoola Devi has the powers to fulfil the longings of all her devotees. 

The temple houses a clumps of holy bells tied to its walls that are known for granting wishes on being ringed. According to a mythology, this temple was built to seek Durga’s protection for the wild animals in the place. The statue of Goddess Durga is said to have been unearthed by a shepherd from a particular place after being guided so by the goddess herself in his dream. This temple is made on the same spot from where this idol was obtained.

Chaubatia

Considered as one of the best places to visit in Ranikhet, the ‘Chaubatia Garden’ is known for their exquisite orchards of peaches, apples, plums and apricots. Stationed at a distance of 10 km. from the heart of Ranikhet, these gardens are a pleasant spot for picnics and day outings.

These gardens are also one of the best examples of step farming in the Himalayan region. This orchard comprises more than 200 varieties of fruits and flowers. A research laboratory is also situated within its vicinity. Accompanied with this, the surroundings of this place provides panoramic views of the snow clad mountain peaks of the majestic Himalayas, as well as  a few religious spots like Nanda Devi Temple, Trishul, Nandaghunti, and Nilkanth.

Ram Mandir

One of the major tourist attractions in Ranikhet that is located near the Chaubatia Gardens and at a distance of 7 km from the city centre. A small flight of stairs goes to the hilltop where the temple is situated. Rama Mandir has a monastery where students are taught ancient vedas along with Vedic and modern mathematics in direction of Sant Sri Mouni Maharaj. People who have a keen interest in vedas should not miss a chance to visit this temple.

Binsar Mahadev Temple

Built at a distance of 19 km from Ranikhet, this temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and is considered one most famous places to visit in Ranikhet.  It is believed that lighting a diya on the day of Vaikunth Chaturdeshi in this temple can fulfil the longing of a child. Many pilgrims and childless couples visit the temple during their vacation in Ranikhet. Located in the heart of thick forests of pine and deodars, with fresh water springs flowing in the area, makes this temple a must visit for people seeking solitude.

Golf Ground

Upat is a tiny town located in the lap of Garhwal Himalayas, at a distance of 5 km from Ranikhet. The town is popularly known for its 9 holes golf course managed by the Indian army. This Golf Course is also considered to be one of the highest in Asia.

 If you are crazy about golfing, you can definitely try playing a game here. Another major tourist attraction near Upat golf course is the one of the popular places to visit in Ranikhet is the ‘Kalika Temple’, dedicated to Goddess Kali. Situated at a distance of 1 km from Upat, in the town of Kalika, this temple is visited by many tourists coming to Ranikhet.

Sunset Points

Ranikhet consists of many sunset points that provide view of the snow capped Himalayan Mountains. These points are considered one of the most beautiful places to visit in Ranikhet. The most prominent amongst these include Machkhali located near woodvilla point between Transit Camp and Ganiadeoli.

Tarikhet Village

Tarikhet is small, yet popular hill station situated at distance of 8 km from the town of Ranikhet. This village is a famous as a momentous site during the India’s struggle for independence. It’s most popular attraction is the ‘Gandhi Kutiya’, which is told to be the place where Mahatma Gandhi rested for a long time during the freedom struggle. 

This place is also popular for its small sized huts used during the freedom struggle and the temple of Golu Devta, which is venerated in the Kumaon region. The village is very cold in the winters and remains moderate in summers, and is best enjoyed from March to October.
