The Mary Rose Overview

The Mary Rose Museum is one of the historic tourist attractions in Portsmouth dedicated to the Mary Rose warship of the English Tudor navy. It puts on display the artefacts from the ship and the wrecked ship itself in a dedicated ship hall. The museum also hosts guided tours and exhibitions portraying the events and objects of Tudor life.

Located in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the Mary Rose Museum is a momentous attraction that is dedicated to the 16th century Tudor navy warship Mary Rose. It is a carrack-style ship built in 1510 that served King Henry VIII’s navy for 33 years before sinking into the sea in 1545 while defending Portsmouth. The Mary Rose Museum was opened in 1984 to commemorate the historical context during which she was active.

It displays a wide range of items and articles from the Tudor time period that tell about the life of over 500 men who lived, worked and died on-board. The audio-visual event that depicts the final moments of Mary Rose under the command of the King during the Battle of the Solent is the major highlight of the museum. You can visit the gallery, witness the Mary Rose itself and explore all its decks. You can also visit other events, exhibitions and lectures about the history of the warship and its victories.
