The Jim Thompson House Overview

The Jim Thompson House in Bangkok, Thailand, is a captivating cultural attraction that showcases the life and legacy of the American entrepreneur and silk merchant, Jim Thompson. The traditional Thai-style house, nestled amidst lush gardens, exhibits an impressive collection of Asian art and artifacts. It offers visitors a glimpse into the fascinating history of this enigmatic figure and the beautiful craftsmanship of Thai architecture.

The Jim Thompson House is a haven for history and art lovers on a Thailand tour, with its enviable collection of artwork from several Asian countries. The property was once owned by an American gentleman by the name of James H W Thompson. He was a prominent figure of his time primarily for his contribution to the revival of the Thai silk industry which had reached rock bottom. Thompson has left a rich legacy behind him after he disappeared mysteriously in 1967 in a Malaysian forest.

The House that has now been converted into a museum is a veritable oasis amid the bustling city. It is cozily tucked near the banks of the Saen Saeb Canal and is flanked by lush green gardens on either side. The entire complex comprises six houses, each made out of teakwood in traditional Thai style which originally belonged to the Ayutthaya and Bangkok's Baan Krua community.

Apart from the Jim Thompson House Museum, the complex also houses the Jim Thompson Art Center which organizes regular exhibitions. Along with that they also take out publications, liaise with both local and overseas cultural institutions, and set up educational programs.

The other facilities in the Jim Thompson House include William Warren Library, the Thai Textiles Society Office, Two Artists-in-Residency Rooms, and a workspace for Conservateurs sans frontiers (Conservators without Borders).
