About Château d'If

The Chateau d'if, an iconic fortress on a secluded island just a few minutes away from the shore of Marseille wasn’t a welcome architectural development at the time of its commissioning. The fortress was seen as a sign of French royalty taking over the city, which wasn’t a topic of joy among locals. The fort welcomed its first prisoners in the 16th century and continued to be a place of imprisonment till the 19th century. At this point, the prison was shut off and the majestic structure was converted into a public landmark with a historic backdrop. Visitors have to take a ferry ride to reach the island from the city shore of Marseille.
